1965 Ford Falcon Ranchero Restomod

I purchased my 65 Ford Ranchero more or less on a whim back in early 2011. I was actually unaware of this model at the time, having been searching for an El Camino when I came across it (I don’t have an extraordinary amount of brand loyalty). Although I often favor Ford, I choose my purchases based on what I’m looking to achieve at the time, what is available and at what price.

Anyway…I wanted a simple, reliable and economical motorcycle transport vehicle, and both the El Camino/Ranchero fit that bill. But I muuuch prefer the look of the 64-65 generation of Rancheros than any of the Camino/Ranchero alternatives.

So I went to look at this Ranchero with that in mind, and what I found was everything but. When I reluctantly purchased it, the poor thing was dilapidated, neglected and had cancerous rust throughout. I don’t know why I bought it, but I did.

Below are some various photos taken at random stages of the restoration process. I’ll organize them later.

Do not be deceived, this thing was a mess when I first brought her home.

I rode out my XR650R to pick her up and loaded the bike into the bed for the return trip.

1964 Ford Ranchero cut up
After robbing what was usable from the parts car, I attempted to find a new home for it. Unable to find one, I eventually was forced to cut it up and have a scrapper come pick it up.
Ford Ranchero Bedside Removed
One piece of the donor car that I decided to use was a bedside. The 65 had slight damage that could have mostly been fixed with filler, but since I had a spare decided to do surgery instead.
Ford Ranchero bedside replacement
After measuring about a hundred times, I cut and fitted the replacement bedside. It fit!

I was very happy with how well everything lined up
Ford Falcon windshield rust
There was quite a bit of cancerous rust throughout the body. Here is some just below the windshield. All of it was fixed, some easier than others.

Never again!

This was the engine bay after I did some minimal work to it.
Ranchero engine bay broken cylinder head bolt
I broke a cylinder head bolt randomly. I didn’t want to pull the heads off so was able to find someone to come out and extract it.
1964 1965 Ford Falcon headunit din modern retrofit
It took quite a bit of work to do a clean retrofit of a modern head unit into the Falcon stereo area. It was also hard finding a head unit that didn’t look horrifically out of place there.
