OpenCPN Weather Fax Plugin XML Update

This page (created 11/30/2016) is relevant to the free Weather Fax plugin version 1.5001 (and older) for the also free OpenCPN navigation software. The information in this post will probably become deprecated once an updated version of the plugin is released (as the XML files themselves will be updated). At any rate…

To anyone who uses or would like to use the Weather Fax plugin, these are updated XML files which will correct some permalink changes. You can read more about them here. Go to post 804. I did not make the changes to these file, they were made by CF user rgleason. The files:

WeatherFaxInternetRetrieval.xml

CoordinateSets.xml

If you’re using Weather Fax 1.5001 or older, then you’ll want these files because they will allow you to continue downloading Weather Fax overlays for your OpenCPN console. If this sounds like jibberish, then see my screenshot below for what I’m talking about here.

On Mac, this file is located by default at:
/Applications/OpenCPN.app/Contents/SharedSupport/plugins/weatherfax_pi/data

In order to update this file [on Mac]:

  1. Download from the link above
  2. Open Finder and navigate to your Applications folder
  3. Control + Click on “OpenCPN” and select “Show Package Contents”explore application directory
  4. Click on Contents > SharedSupport > plugins > weatherfax_pi > data
  5. (OPTIONAL) Rename old file to .old in order to keep a copy of it
  6. Drag the downloaded version “WeatherFaxInternetRetrieval.xml” and CoordinateSets.xml into this Finder window. Your system may require you to enter your password to complete this step.

The procedure will be essentially the same on Windows/Linux, except that the location of the plugin data folder may be different.

Voila, you’re good to go:

OpenCPN Weather Fax Plugin

*** I have no association to OpenCPN and it’s development team. The OpenCPN Weather Fax plugin, among many others, was created by this legend: About

Sean de Pagnier

He could use our support, so if you have gained from his plugins, consider donating something to him.

I made this page so that others who enjoy the plugin will not need to wait until a new version is released before being able to take advantage of the feature once again.
