We made our way by bus and water taxi to the island of Caye Caulker, Belize. We stopped in Chetumal, Mexico for the day Sunday while awaiting our water taxi ride. If you ever plan a similar trip, do some haggling with the two water taxi companies in Chetumal. What should have been about $70-80 USD in water taxi rides I got for $42.50 by moving back and forth between the companies with the others current lowest bid. That price included the water taxi from Chetumal to Caye Caulker, to San Pedro and then to Belize City. We eventually went with this company:http://belizewatertaxi.com/. They gave us the best price, and also didn’t charge a $20 “port fee” which the other company assured us was legit…though for some reason they were the only one charging it. To get from Cancun to Caye Caulker cost about $45/each.

I much prefer Caye Caulker over Cancun; it’s hard to imagine a nicer Caribbean paradise with cocktails at $1.75/USD and free snorkeling all around the island. If you plan to stay on Caye Caulker and want to save money, I recommend contacing Maddi Collins of the PAW Animal Sanctuary (http://www.pawanimalsanctuarybelize.com). For $5 USD/night/person we had a secluded oceanside spot. Maddi is very friendly and also has less primitive accommodations available such as her cabana. We will be moving on to San Pedro of Ambergis Caye tomorrow. You can watch my progress in real time at this link:
